Art Nouveau The Nibelungen. Retold for the German people by Franz Keim. With 16 colour illustrations in bronze-coloured gold and book decorations by Carl Otto Czeschka. Vienna and Leipzig, Gerlach and Wiedling, (1908–09). 67 pp. Small 8°. Grey cloth with coloured edges, printed title on spine and cover, and blue-and-white coloured paper endpapers (rubbed, stained). First edition. – Gerlach’s Jugendbücherei, Volume 22. – Heller 158. Seebaß I, 726 and II, 621. - Carl Otto Czeschka (1878–1960) was regarded as one of the most outstanding artists of the Wiener Werkstätte. - ‘This little book, thanks to C.O. Czeschka’s design, became arguably the best-known in the entire series and is still regarded today as its particular showpiece. The unity of the book’s decoration, typography and the decorative borders framing the individual pages, together with the stylised illustrations featuring their luminous gold against a deep, matt black background, represent a high point of Viennese Art Nouveau in book art.” (Exhibition catalogue “Lachende Kinder: the Ida Marie Kling Children’s Book Collection”, Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, 2008, no. 26) – A few stains, mainly in the white margins; otherwise generally well preserved.
