Description
Art Nouveau – Judaica Zweig, Stefan Lilien, Ephraim Mose. His Work. With an introduction by Stefan Zweig. With numerous illustrations. Berlin and Leipzig, Schuster & Löffler, 1903. 347 pp., 4 leaves. Large 4° illustrated original linen binding (slightly stained and rubbed). Klawiter 1512. – A magnificent first edition and impressive magnum opus on Ephraim Mose Lilien (1874–1925), the eminent Art Nouveau illustrator, graphic artist and bookplate designer. This lavishly illustrated volume brings together Lilien’s unmistakable visual world through numerous illustrations: ornamentally refined book art, expressive drawings, symbolist figurative compositions and Jewish themes of great poetic power. Through his fusion of Art Nouveau aesthetics and Zionist-Jewish visual language, Lilien shaped a new, self-assured visual modernism. Of particular significance is the extensive introduction by the young Stefan Zweig, with whom Lilien had been on friendly terms since 1902. In it, Zweig pays tribute to Lilien’s artistic journey, his early works for magazines such as *Die Jugend* and *Simplicissimus*, his work as an illustrator, and his involvement in the Zionist movement within Theodor Herzl’s circle. The text is regarded as an important testimony to the Jewish cultural renaissance around 1900. Only very slight browning or staining in the white margins; still a fine copy.
