Description
Caricature Nessler, Walter The Hitler ABC. With an accompanying booklet by Diether Schmidt on the Hitler Alphabet. 2 vols. Featuring 26 mounted colour caricatures and 1 colour cover illustration, as well as 9 full-page illustrations in the accompanying booklet. Pulsnitz, Ernst Rietschel Foundation, 2000. 16, 27 leaves. Original cardboard volumes in an OPP slipcase. One of 300 (GA 330) copies, signed by W. Nessler on the endpaper. - Significant examples of artistic resistance against National Socialism. As a portfolio in which every letter of the alphabet was accompanied by a scathing satire on Hitler’s character traits, they served as a tool for exposing Nazi propaganda. Nessler created the caricatures in Dresden even before his emigration in 1937. The drawings undermined the untouchable and heroic image of Hitler constructed by Nazi propaganda. By ridiculing him, Nessler symbolically stripped the dictator of his power and his aura. The caricatures were smuggled out of Nazi Germany in her luggage by Nessler’s wife at the time (Prudence Ashbee), at great personal risk. One of 300 (GA 330) copies, signed by W.
