Description
Kippenberger, Martin Through Puberty to Success. Berlin, NGBK, 1981. 80 leaves. 8°. Paperback with photograph (scuffed and bumped). A very rare first publication on a key phase in Martin Kippenberger’s early work. The catalogue was published to mark the exhibition ‘Lieber Maler, male mir .’ at the RealismusStudio of the Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst, Berlin, and accompanied the exhibition from 6 March to 16 April 1981. The NGBK lists the publication as having 158 pages, numerous illustrations, no ISBN, and Prestel Verlag as a collaborating partner; this copy is part of a limited edition of just 500 copies. - The publication is far more than a conventional exhibition catalogue: in the montage style characteristic of Kippenberger, it combines photographs, newspaper clippings and everyday material, poems, aphorisms, as well as private and public visual worlds. It is precisely this intermingling of fiction and fact, self-staging, irony and biographical material that makes the book a unique artist’s book and a key document of the early reception of Kippenberger’s work. The NGBK emphasises that, in the accompanying publication, Kippenberger brought together newspaper cuttings, photographs, poems and aphorisms in order to deliberately blur the boundaries between the private and the public. Closely related to this is the exhibition “Lieber Maler, male mir .”, with which Kippenberger radically subverted the conventional image of the autonomously creative painter-genius in 1981. For the series, he had large-format paintings executed by a cinema poster artist based on his own designs, thereby calling into question authorship, originality, delegation and the mechanisms of the art world. The Berlin presentation comprised nine large-format works and is today regarded as one of the artist’s defining early projects. Accompanying the exhibition is the equally independently conceived, lavishly illustrated catalogue *En cas de réclamation les sentiments vous seront remboursés*, published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at the Halle Sud, Centre d’expositions de la Ville de Genève, from 24 September to 29 October 1989. The first edition comprises 94 unpaginated pages and is documented as a lithographically printed catalogue; one copy is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Together, this forms a particularly appealing collection of two early and important Kippenberger publications. Published to mark the exhibition “Lieber Maler male mir …” at the Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (NGBK), 6 March – 16 April 1981. - The first few leaves are partly loose. Overall in good condition. - Included: ‘En cas de réclamation, les sentiments vous seront remboursées’. - Catalogue for the exhibition of the same name. - Overall in good condition.
