Description
Kleukens-Presse Thucydides Pericles’ Oration in Memory of the Fallen (from the Second Book on the Peloponnesian War). Translated from the Ancient Greek by Rudolf G. Binding. Frankfurt am Main, Kleukens Presse, 1920. 24 pp., of which 20 are printed. 4°. Brown saffian leather binding (marked ‘Werkomer, Munich”) over five decorative bands with gold-embossed title on the spine and fillets on the cover and inner edges, endpapers of sturdy vellum, and gold-edged top (spine and edges showing minimal light discolouration, slight scuffing and wear). In a new paper slipcase. No. 114 of 225 copies on deckle-edged paper (GA 250) from the Kleukens press, featuring the famous Periclean speech as recorded by Thucydides. – Rodenberg, p. 104.5. - Fifth printing by the Kleukens Press; the text, set in a narrow type area using the Kleukens Antiqua typeface modified for this press, is richly printed on substantial, handmade laid paper with a watermark on one side. - The hand-bound cover, as simple as it is elegant, signed in the footer of the rear text block, was produced by the Werkomer workshop in Munich. - Endpapers show slight glue staining and light foxing; otherwise a well-preserved copy. No. 114 of 225 copies on thick laid paper (out of a total print run of 250) of Pericles’ famous speech to the fallen in Thucydides’ version. Bound in brown saffian leather (signed ‘Werkomer, München’) over five decorative raised bands with a gilt-embossed title on the spine, gilt fillets on the spine, the boards and the inner margins, a gilt top edge and thick wove endpapers (spine and edges showing minor shelf wear, slightly worn). In a new paper slipcase. – 5th edition by the Kleukens Press, featuring a slim typeface for the text in a version of Kleukens Antiqua modified for this press, and boldly printed on substantial, handmade laid paper with a single-sided deckle edge. - The simple yet elegant binding, signed at the bottom of the rear endpaper, was executed by Werkomer, Munich. - Endpapers show shelf wear at the margins; otherwise, this is indeed a well-preserved copy. This lot is subject to standard tax.
