Description
Decorative Arts
Offinger, I.
Collection of 12 drawings and designs. 1895. Some watercolour drawings in ink and pencil. Various sizes. Some mounted on vellum. Each signed and dated.
A collection of, in part, decorative arts designs, as well as ornamental and floral designs and studies. These include a ‘lithograph stand’ and a design for a piano lid. - A collection of three design drawings from the circle of the historicist Vienna School of Applied Arts, executed in pen, gouache and pencil. The sheets exemplify the practice of decorative arts pattern drawing in the 1890s and demonstrate the interweaving of precise botanical observation with a historicist repertoire of forms, typical of this educational tradition. The sheets bear the location ‘Vienna’ and a date in the early 1890s, suggesting they were produced in the immediate vicinity of the Vienna School of Applied Arts or a comparable training institution for goldsmiths, plasterers and furniture designers. The three sheets are recognisably by the same hand and together form an instructive example of the breadth of arts and crafts design practice within Historicism – ranging from precious small objects to large-scale architectural ornamentation. Some with heavier discolouration along the edges and foxing. Overall, the drawings are in good condition.
