Marées Society Schlegel, Friedrich Lucinde. With 44 original woodcuts by Walter Teutsch, of which 16 are full-page, 1 title vignette and 15 further illustrated vignettes and decorative borders, as well as 15 initials (of which 4 are repeated several times). And: Hand-printed plates relating to *Lucinde*. A separate set of the 44 original woodcuts mounted in passe-partouts in a folder, each signed by the artist. (= Prints of the Marées Society, 11). Munich, Piper, 1919. 2 unnumbered Leaves (endpapers), 102 pp., 1 leaf (print plate), 2 unnumbered leaves (rear endpapers). 4° and folio. Original half-leather binding over four bands with gold-embossed title, endpapers of pink Japanese paper with fibre inclusions and gilt edge at the top. Linen slipcase with title on a mounted label (tanned; the flaps at the hinges have small losses and tears.) No. 22 of 50 copies on Japanese paper, as here complete as the text volume together with the ‘Extrasuite’ of extraordinary rarity. – Rodenberg, p. 365, 11. – The supplementary suite comprising all 44 (recte 50, the 8 initials grouped into 2 blocks each) rich and velvety-looking woodcuts from the text volume on 26 sheets of filigree Japanese paper with an embossed stamp (Leda and the Swan) and some with a double-sided deckle edge; all partially mounted beneath the original passe-partouts, numbered with a blind-stamped mark. 15 of the sheets are alternatively on intense yellow paper, the rest on natural-coloured paper. - Set and printed under the supervision of E. R. Weiß; this special edition was bound in the hand-binding department of Spamer, Leipzig. - A press print in very good condition. The last time a complete set was recorded at auction was in 1990. Copy no. 22 of 50 copies each of the deluxe edition on Japanese laid paper, complete as here with a bound volume containing 44 woodcut illustrations by Walter Teutsch and the supplementary suite. - The suite repeats all 44 (recte 50, the 8 initials combined into 4 in 2 blocks each) woodcuts (full-page illustrations, headpieces, vignettes and illustrated initials) from the text volume on 26 sheets of extra-light Japanese wove paper with a blind-embossed stamp (Leda and the Swan) and, in some cases, with a deckle edge on two sides; all are partially mounted beneath the original mat, numbered with a blind stamp. 15 of the sheets are alternatively on deep yellow Japanese laid paper, the rest on natural-coloured paper of the same type. – Compiled and printed under the supervision of E. R. Weiß, this deluxe edition was hand-bound by Spamer, Leipzig. - The flaps of the map have some damage and are torn at the joints; otherwise, these are indeed very well-preserved copies. We have not been able to trace a complete set at auction since 1990. This lot is subject to standard taxation.
