Description
Fashion Delaunay, Sonia Tapis et tissus. Paris, Éditions d'Art Charles Moreau, c. 1929 (L'Art international d'aujourd'hui 15). 3 leaves of text and 50 loose plates, 11 of which are coloured using the pochoir technique. Folio. Original half-linen folder with typographic title on the cover and fastening ribbons. (Folder heavily browned and stained; linen spine completely detached and largely disintegrated; covers loose; corners in places heavily bumped and with partial losses; fastening ribbons preserved only in fragments.) Lipperheide Yb 100. – An important portfolio on modern textile art of the interwar period. Sonia Delaunay edited and introduced it. She was herself a leading exponent of Simultaneism and already a successful textile designer. The plates present carpets and fabrics by the international avant-garde, including works by Sonia Delaunay, Eileen Gray and Fernand Léger. From the Bauhaus circle, Anni Albers, Martha Erps and Ruth Valentin are represented, amongst others; from the Wiener Werkstätte circle, Josef Hoffmann and Dagobert Peche. The portfolio thus presents Delaunay’s own designs not as a sideline to her painting. It places them alongside the works of other textile designers, thereby illustrating how geometric abstraction found its way into the applied arts. The plates, coloured using the pochoir technique, reproduce the colourfulness of the originals with particular vibrancy. Plates from the portfolio were on display in 2025 in the exhibition ‘Woven Histories’ at MoMA. The portfolio is Volume 15 of the 20-volume series ‘L’Art international d’aujourd’hui’, in which each volume comprises 50 plates. - The paper of the inner plates is yellowed, with some slight scuffing to the edges and very occasional small losses at the corners. Overall still in good condition. Magnificent prints of the abstract compositions with margins; the colours are rich in contrast and fresh. 3 leaves of text and 50 loose plates, 11 of them coloured using the pochoir technique. Folio.
