Tréfousse & Cie. – Tannery, dye works and glove manufacturer. Leather dressing, dyeing and manufacture of gloves. Chaumont (Haute-Marne), Paris, London and New York, c. 1878. 3 unnumbered leaves (printed on one side), with 20 cardboard leaves containing rolled-out, mounted plates in the Chinese style, as well as 20 accompanying loose or bound opposite text leaves with explanatory text in French and English. Quarto. Original half-leather binding with gold-embossed title on the front cover.
A rare, elaborately designed company and sample album from the renowned French glove manufacturer Tréfousse & Cie. The 20 mounted engraved plates illustrate, in unusual detail, the entire production process involved in the manufacture of luxury leather gloves: from the selection, sorting and preparation of the hides, through tanning, tanning, dyeing and drying, right through to cutting, sewing, shaping, smoothing, inspection, packaging and dispatch. The focus is on large-format interior views of the workshops and production rooms, showing numerous male and female workers at machines, workbenches and specialised equipment, supplemented by a few exterior views of the factory premises in Chaumont. The bilingual French-English text sheets each explain the work processes depicted and are clearly also aimed at the international audience of the branches in Paris, London and New York. The album is thus both a prestigious corporate publication, a vivid document of industrial luxury goods production in the late 19th century, and an important record of the history of French glove-making. Corners slightly bumped; covers slightly stained or rubbed. The silk blouses are slightly soiled in places. Overall, a fine and well-preserved copy of this decorative and rare company album.

Oblong 4to. Original half morocco, gilt-lettered on the upper cover. A rare and elaborately produced trade and specimen album issued by the distinguished French glove manufacturer Tréfousse & Cie. The 20 mounted engraved plates illustrate, in unusual detail, the entire process of manufacturing luxury leather gloves: from the selection, sorting and preparation of the hides, through leather dressing, tanning, dyeing and drying, to cutting, sewing, shaping, finishing, quality control, packing and dispatch. The main focus is on large-scale interior views of the workshops and production rooms, filled with numerous male and female workers operating machinery, working at workbenches and using specialised equipment; these are supplemented by a small number of exterior views of the company’s premises in Chaumont. The bilingual French and English text on the pages explains the individual stages depicted and was clearly intended also for an international clientele served by the firm’s branches in Paris, London and New York. The album is thus at once a representative corporate publication, a vivid document of late nineteenth-century industrial luxury goods production, and an important testimony to the history of French glove-making. Corners slightly bumped; covers lightly soiled and rubbed. The tissue guards are occasionally lightly soiled. Overall, a handsome and well-preserved copy of this decorative and rare trade album.
