Only edition. - A rare publication, never released commercially, about the prominent Berlin entrepreneur and patron of the arts (1849–1925), who controlled almost the entire trade in Silesian coal on the Berlin market, served on the supervisory board of Dresdner Bank, and was appointed by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1913 as the first and only Jew to be appointed to the Prussian House of Lords. His circle of friends included, amongst others, Max Liebermann, Arnold Böcklin and Adolph Menzel. As Berlin’s greatest bourgeois patron of the arts of his time, he donated the Villa Massimo in Rome to the Prussian state in 1913 as a cultural institute. - Includes reprinted letters from Paul Cassirer, Lovis Corinth, Ernst Haeckel, Max Liebermann, Max Klinger, Hans Thoma and many others. - Enclosed: a mourning-bordered visiting card belonging to Arnhold’s widow, Mrs Eduard Arnhold, with the address Regentenstraße 19 in Berlin (corners partly slightly creased and bumped) and 2 newspaper cuttings. - Slightly browned due to the paper; overall, a well-preserved copy.
