Koetzle 86. – With photographs of Ella Fitzgerald (6) and Louis Armstrong (9 + 1 instrument illustration), taken during a concert in Cologne. – “The Chargesheim Archive, comprising 40,000 negatives in 47 shoeboxes, was scientifically catalogued and documented by Evelyn Bertram-Neunzig (DGPh). She discovered the negatives belonging to the jazz edition ‘Armstrong-Fitzgerald’ (1962) amongst them and, during this research, came across 860 negatives that form a body of work exploring the Cologne jazz scene.
Photography. – An impressive photographic portrait series by the prominent Cologne photographer Chargesheimer, featuring Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong and produced on the occasion of a concert in Cologne. The portfolio comprises six images of Fitzgerald, nine photographs of Armstrong, and one instrumental study; its close-up, high-contrast compositions convey the physical presence and expressive power of both jazz greats. A rare early photographic portfolio at the intersection of jazz, cultural and photographic history.
