Description
Photography Chargesheimer (i.e. Karl Heinz Hargesheimer) Under Crane Trees. Images from a Street. With a text by Heinrich Böll. Cologne, Greven, 1958. 46 unnumbered leaves. Large 8°. Original cloth binding with original dust jacket (the latter with minimal edge wear). First edition. – Heidtmann 9946. – Heiting/Wiegand 132. – Chargesheimer’s best-known photobook, a milestone in post-war German photography and a visual monument to a vanishing urban way of life. The street Unter Krahnenbäumen is situated in Cologne’s Kunibertsviertel district, near the Old Town. In the 1950s, it was characterised by simple, often impoverished living conditions. Chargesheimer lived amongst the residents for a year and documented their everyday lives with great intimacy and empathy – children at play, lovers on night-time strolls, celebrations, grief and loneliness.
