Paris, Les Éditions de la Roseraie, 1929. 6 leaves, 233 pp., 4 leaves, 3 leaves. Orange morocco with coloured speckled inlays and a gold-stamped title label and further speckled inlays. Endpapers of marbled moiré with green fillets along the inner edges. Handmade paper edges on both sides with gilt top edge. Cover bound in Japanese paper. In a lined slipcase. Signed: Manuel Gérard. One of 36 copies of the special edition, each with two print states. - Contains: an addendum with a subscription prospectus, including two etchings. - Under the artistic direction of the French artist Édouard Chimot, Sylvain Sauvage produced 20 illustrations for this special edition of Henri de Regnier’s novel, each of which is included in both the first and second states. Whilst the first states were each printed with a remark in the plate and left uncoloured, the prints of the second state are striking for their rich colouring. The 41 aquatint etchings in total also include the first state of the title page. Furthermore, Sauvage produced 27 woodcuts, which were printed in brown ink. - The artistically crafted binding in a vibrant orange colour with various coloured speckled inlays was produced by the French bookbinder Manuel Gérard. - Rubbing of the etchings. Overall, a very fine copy with a magnificent binding. With 40 aquatint etchings in two states of printing (20 each), a coloured title vignette, and 27 wood engravings in the text. Orange morocco with colourful speckled inlays, a gilt-stamped title and further speckled inserts. Marbled moiré endpapers with green inner-edge fillets. Two-sided deckle edges with gilt edges. Original paper cover bound in Japanese style. In a lined slipcase.
