Rops, Félicien
Mallarmé, Stéphane
Les Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé. Brussels. With an etching by Félicien Rops. Brussels, Edmond Deman, 20 February 1899. Hand-bound lemon-yellow morocco binding with gilt title on the spine. Inner edges with rich gilt decoration comprising multiple gold-embossed fillets. Signed: Gruel. In a lined slipcase. (Spine slightly discoloured, slight rubbing).
Exsteens 526. – Mascha 894. – Talvart/Place XIII, 120, 5 B. – Partially first edition. In 1888, Mallarmé considered publishing *Poesies* in a second edition. However, his many reservations delayed the project, which only came to fruition after his death. The final edition of *Poesies* was published by the poet himself. It contains fifteen unpublished and revised pieces, as well as a bibliography of the author’s publications, which he compiled himself. The edition, which had been planned since 1891, was not printed until several months after Mallarmé’s death due to his delays. It was prepared by the poet based on the texts of the 1887 photolithographic edition and contains his final revisions and fourteen new pieces. Printed in italics, in red and black, and adorned with a remarkable frontispiece by Félicien Rops entitled ‘La Grande Lyre’, this edition was a work of art in its own right. The zinc etching in the 6th (Exsteens) or 10th (Mascha) state, without the remarques, signed on the left-hand side of the plate and bearing the inscription ‘Ad Astra’. – In good condition.
