Schlotter, Eberhard Columbus – The Tragedy of Man. With 46 original etchings. No place, no publisher, (1992). Folio (52.5 x 42 cm). 48 double sheets loosely inserted into a dark green antique-style case with a gold-embossed vignette and gold-embossed title (partly worn and scuffed). One of 43 Roman-numbered copies of the German special edition. Each print is numbered and signed. - “To mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas (...) he portrays the famous navigator as an adventurer and dreamer who pursued his personal motives – the greed for gold and fame – with ruthless brutality. Christopher Columbus’s incursion into hitherto unknown territories brought immeasurable suffering upon the population and heralded the downfall of the indigenous cultures. Eberhard Schlotter’s critical view of this revered figure in Spanish history had consequences: 17 pages were not permitted to be published in the Spanish edition.” (Eberhard Schlotter Foundation). - A few pages are slightly browned at the edges.
