Estimate €450 - €600
Description
Verlaine, Paul Women. A German adaptation of the book *Femmes* by Curt Moreck, including four previously unpublished poems from the manuscript. Hanover, Paul Steegemann, 1919. 49 pages. 4°. Original parchment binding with gold-stamped spine title and gilt edges at the top, in an (original?) linen slipcase with spine title. No. 1 of 25 copies (GA 600) of the special edition on handmade paper and in full parchment. - Meyer 21,2. - Hayn-Got. IV,602. - Heinrich Stinnes’ copy, bearing his signature, the date (5 February 1920) and the purchase price (150 marks) on the upper margin of the title page. - The four allegedly unpublished poems were written by Moreck himself. - The work was seized by the courts, resulting in a fine of 500 marks for the publisher. - “When, in 1920, the *Börsenblatt für den Deutschen Buchhandel* refused to carry an advertisement for that private edition of Paul Verlaine’s *Les Femmes* and some members, because of this affair, moved to have the publisher expelled from the Börsenverein, Kurt Tucholsky was therefore justified in tracing this case back to its political core in the *Weltbühne* on 12 August 1920: ‘The real antipathy is directed not against the dead Frenchman, but against the living German: the reactionaries in Leipzig do not like the publisher.’ Paul Steegemann has, with commendable diligence, published a large number of young modern authors and political radicals, and because Kurt Hiller, or Heinrich Vogeler-Worpswede, or Heinrich Mann, or Rudolf Leonhard are not loyal to the German War Veterans’ Association, Leipzig, gripped by fear of Bolshevism, has now initiated expulsion proceedings against the politically inconvenient publisher. ‘That, then, and not Verlaine’s adoration of courtesans, is the crux of the matter’ (Meyer, Paul Steegemann Verlag. Marzona Collection, p. 29 ff.) – bookplate on the inside cover. This lot is subject to standard tax.
