Verve. Vol. VIII, Nos. 29–30. A collection of 180 drawings by Picasso. Paris 1954. Folio. With 1 colour lithograph by Picasso on the cover, 16 original colour lithographs by Picasso, and numerous illustrations. OPp. (bonds bumped and with tears). A double and special issue of the art magazine edited by Tériade, dedicated to the work of Pablo Picasso. It brings together the 180 drawings that Picasso created in Vallauris during the winter of 1953–54, between 28 November 1953 and 3 February 1954. The series centres on the painter and his model, circus and theatre figures, as well as characters from a self-invented ‘human comedy’. Tériade reproduced them in their entirety and in chronological order. The full-size heliogravures were produced by Draeger Frères, whilst the colour lithographs were printed by Mourlot. Picasso designed the colour lithograph cover illustration especially for this edition, along with the frontispiece and title page.
