Description
Whiteread, Rachel *Mike and the Modelmakers*. Includes a zinc cast and 1 signed ex-libris silkscreen print. Salon Verlag, Cologne, 2008. 42 pp. Paperback and box (approx. 30.4 x 22 cm). One of 40 copies of the special edition, signed and numbered by Whiteread in her own hand. The zinc cast with a fabric cover by Whiteread, numbered and monogrammed. - Rachel Whiteread was invited for this edition to select a book of particular significance to her, for which she designed a new dust jacket and presented it under her own name as a ‘reprint’ – in this case, *Mike and the Modelmakers* by M. Sasek, published in 1970. Whiteread’s London studio was opposite the Lesney company, which manufactured Matchbox cars in the 1970s. - “I chose this book because it is related to where I live and how I work. My old studio was next to the site of the original Matchbox factory. As a child I played with Matchbox cars; now my children play with them. Many of those industrial buildings have been demolished in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. I found an original copy of this book in a second-hand shop in the late 1980s; it seemed like a fitting tribute to those old buildings, to the author and illustrator M. Sasek, and to those wonderful Matchbox cars. I was delighted to give it a new lease of life.” (Rachel Whiteread). – The book is still in its original packaging. In good condition.
