Description
ABC books Hungarian Leporello ABC. Bonyhád (Hungary), 1955. Handcrafted vintage leporello featuring 23 watercolour illustrations and two pages of handwritten text in Hungarian. 25 cardboard sheets. 34 × 23.5 cm. A unique, handmade ABC leporello, created in 1955 in Bonyhád (Hungary). It features 23 letters of the Hungarian alphabet in vibrant red with gold ornamentation. Each letter is associated with an animal whose Hungarian name begins with that letter. For example, ‘H’ stands for ‘hattyú’ (swan). The cover features the title motif ‘ABC’. The three letters are painted in red and adorned with gold decoration. Inside them sit an antelope (A), an owl (B) and a cat (C). They are framed by delicate, olive-green foliage. Each page features a large red letter with gold decoration, alongside a colourful watercolour illustration of an animal with ink outlines. The owl for the letter B, for example, is perched on an oak branch against a midnight-blue sky with a yellow crescent moon. Two pages contain handwritten text in Hungarian. It is written in rhyme and playfully describes the purpose of the little book. The initial letters A to F are rendered as red initials with gold highlights, and Art Nouveau-style tendrils frame the text. The verses first mention the antelope, the owl and the cat. They then promise that all the other animals will also appear in turn in the big book. The booklet is dedicated to ‘Imruska’, a diminutive form of Imre. - Cover slightly scuffed and browned; pages moderately yellowed due to acid-containing paper; one page has a dog-ear and scattered pencil marks; overall in good condition.
