Description
ABC books Nouvel Abecedaire avec des Conversations sur l'Histoire des Animaux, illustrated with lovely engravings. With a coloured copper vignette and 4 engraved, coloured plates. – Zurich, Trachsler, (c. 1830). 72 pp. Contemporary paperback (scuffed and worn). Extremely rare; no copies currently available on the market to our knowledge. Only 1 copy in libraries worldwide (University Library of Zurich, PA 1476). - The *Nouvel abécédaire avec des conversations* forms part of Trachsler’s characteristic output of French-language textbooks and picture books intended for school use (and also distributed outside Switzerland): small-format primers, richly illustrated with woodcuts or copperplate engravings, which, in addition to the alphabet and initial reading exercises, offered short conversations – model dialogues for practising language and manners – for early foreign language and reading instruction. This genre of ‘abécédaire à conversations’ was widespread in the German-French border region of Switzerland and southern Germany, as it taught children both to read and simple French phrases. - pp. 19/20 with a half-page tear; otherwise a largely neat copy.
