Bertuch, Friedrich Justin A picture book for children, containing an enjoyable collection of animals, plants, flowers, fruits, minerals and traditional costumes … accompanied by brief scientific explanations suited to a child’s understanding. Volume 7 (of 12). With 100 copperplate engravings, mostly old-coloured, containing a total of over 500 illustrations. Weimar, Industrie-Comptoir, 1810. 1 leaf (title page), 120 text leaves, 100 plates, 1 leaf (table of contents). Lex-8°. Contemporary binding with handwritten Title on a paper label; the covers bound in veined paste paper (endpapers replaced; bumped at the edges, corners and joints; scuffed in places). Complete 7th volume of what is probably the most famous illustrated book for children of its time. - Goedeke IV, 1, 679, 19. - Nissen 340. - Rümann 33. - Schug 162. - Seebaß 180. - Wegehaupt I, 133. - The text leaves bound between the plates have German descriptions on the recto and French on the verso; up to and including plate 20, there are additional text leaves with English explanations on the recto and Italian on the verso. - Provenance: Riga Natural History Society, with the institution’s stamp (now obliterated) on the title page and final page. - Front endpaper bears library stamps. The upper margin is occasionally more closely trimmed, but without any loss of text. Partly slightly browned; a few leaves and plates show mostly minor finger, dirt and water-stain marks at the margins. Overall, a well-preserved copy; the copper engravings, carefully executed under the direction of H. Lips, are of genuine artistic value and mostly retain rich, fresh colouring. Complete vol. 7 of this most famous visual encyclopaedia for children of its time, with 100 fine copper-engraved plates, most of them old-coloured, containing a total of over 500 illustrations. Contemporary cardboard binding with a handwritten title on the spine on a paper label; the boards are covered with veined paste paper (endpapers replaced, scuffed at the edges, corners and joints, and worn in places). - For references, see above. - The text leaves bound between the plates contain descriptions in German on the recto and in French on the verso; up to and including plate 20, there are additional text leaves with explanations in English on the recto and in Italian on the verso. - Provenance: Riga Natural History Society, with its obliterated stamps on the title page and the last page. - The front endpaper bears library seals.
