Description
Bismarck, Otto von Pilartz, Jakob (Jacques) A collection of 20 original photographs documenting Otto von Bismarck’s spa stays in Bad Kissingen. Circa 1891–92. Bromide silver gelatine on photographic paper. Dimensions ranging from 13 x 19.5 cm to approx. 22.5 x 30 cm. Each mounted on backing board, some with a passe-partout. Most bear the photographer’s blind stamp ‘Pilartz Hofphotogr. Bad Kissingen’; some have a label on the reverse (here with a typographic description), others with an additional handwritten description. From 1874 onwards, Otto von Bismarck spent several summers in Bad Kissingen to recuperate from his ill health. During his very first stay at Edmund Diruf’s guesthouse, he was the victim of an assassination attempt by the cooper’s apprentice Eduard Kullmann, who fired several shots. Nevertheless, von Bismarck returned, though he spent his subsequent stays in the nearby town of Hausen. The town was an important location for Bismarck’s political contacts and relaxing breaks. – Jakob Pilartz was a German court photographer to several rulers. He was Bismarck’s preferred photographer and photographed him on numerous occasions during his spa visits, which lasted several weeks. In particular, the series of portrait photographs taken in 1890 was widely circulated. – In addition to several portraits of von Bismarck, the collection includes, amongst other things: several photographs of the unveiling ceremony for the monument to the late His Majesty King Ludwig I of Bavaria. - Otto von Bismarck out for a walk with his German Shorthaired Pointer in Bad Kissingen. - Prince Bismarck receives the homage of the people of Baden, Hesse, the Palatinate (...) A snapshot showing Dr Schmeel (Darmstadt) approaching. - Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (...) receives the homage of the monument committee. - The mounting boards show, in places, some larger moisture stains, are mottled and show some crease marks; 1 sheet has cut-offs. The photographs are partly somewhat faded, with minimal discolouration. Overall in good condition. Collection of 20 original photographs of Otto von Bismarck’s visits to Bad Kissingen.
