Souvenir sheets from the parliamentary fact-finding mission from 12 to 24 June 1908. Album containing 126 mounted photographs (silver gelatine prints, 11 x 13.5 cm to 21.5 x 28.5 cm). Berlin, Neue Photographische Gesellschaft, 1908. 2 printed leaves with a list of participants and a catalogue of illustrations. Quarto folio. Contemporary green cloth binding with gold-stamped title (buffed, scuffed, joints slightly torn).
Fact-finding mission by Members of the Reichstag and naval officers, led by Admiral and State Secretary Alfred von Tirpitz, along the Baltic and North Sea coasts from Danzig to Wilhelmshaven to assess the economic and military conditions of selected ports and coastal towns. Also provides interesting documentation on the proceedings and organisation of such a fact-finding mission over 100 years ago. Enclosed is an invitation for Lieutenant Commander von Gohren to a dinner with participants of the fact-finding mission at the Hotel Adlon, including a menu. – Amongst other things, the following are shown: Schichau Shipyard in Gdańsk, the training ship Grand Duchess Elisabeth, the cruiser Yorck in the Port of Kiel, the liners Braunschweig and Elsass, the Levensau High Bridge, Hamburg (sailing ship harbour, Town Hall, Bismarck Monument), Cuxhaven (harbour, Dölles Hotel), Bremen (free port, fishing harbour, town hall). – With mounted typographic captions beneath the photographs. – Several of the silk mounts are missing or damaged; otherwise generally well preserved.
