Ethnography
A collection of 32 ethnographic portrait studies. Circa 1890. Albumen prints, mounted in groups of four on eight cardboard mounts. 9 x 12 cm.
The photographs depict 37 portraits of people from various ethnographic groups. These include, amongst others, people of European, South African and Native American descent. For the most part, they are dressed in Central European fashion and wear hairstyles typical of the late 19th century. Some of the women are wearing small items of jewellery such as earrings and necklaces. The photographs are each hand-inscribed with names; the names appear to be of Dutch origin. – Edges of the cards slightly browned. Photographs slightly faded. Overall, very well preserved.
