Description
Hunyady, József
Lajos Kassák at home. Rephotographed silver gelatine print. Budapest 1963. 23 x 17 cm.
The portrait shows Lajos Kassák (1887–1967) at home, four years before his death. Kassák was a poet, painter and publisher, and is regarded as the ‘father of the Hungarian avant-garde’. From 1915, he edited the magazine *A Tett* and, from 1916, *MA*. Following the banning of his literary works in the 1950s, he turned his attention back to painting and created large-format abstract collages. The photographer József Hunyady (Pécs 1921 – Budapest 1983) worked primarily as a writer and journalist. Among other publications, he wrote for “Képes Újság”, “Pajtás” and “Népszava”. In his spare time, he worked as an amateur photographer and captured images of many writers, actors and artists of his time. Photographs of Kassák from 1963, taken by Hunyady, are also recorded in the Fortepan Archive. A small hole, probably from a stapling device, is visible at the edge. - Slightly creased, otherwise in good condition.
