Hartmanova,
Jewish cemetery in Brandýs nad Labem (Czech Republic). – 7 vintage prints. Silver gelatine (12.3 x 17.5 cm). Landscape format. 8° album.
The Jewish cemetery in Brandýs nad Labem is a striking testament to the former Jewish community of this town in Central Bohemia, which today, together with Stará Boleslav, forms the twin town of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav. The historic burial ground preserves tombstones bearing Hebrew inscriptions and traditional symbols of Jewish funerary culture. Its stones—some standing close together, surrounded by vegetation and partly weathered—convey both the character of a place of remembrance and that of a historical archive. According to the handwritten dedication in the album, the photographs shown here were taken on 2 October 1957 and document the cemetery at a time when many Jewish burial grounds in Czechoslovakia were scarcely maintained following the destruction of the Jewish communities during the Shoah and under the conditions of the post-war period. They therefore possess not only photographic value but also value as a source of local and cultural history: the photographs record the design of individual gravestones, their Hebrew inscriptions and the state of preservation of the site at that time.
