Press photography – GDR Hensky, Herbert Wilhelm Pieck (KPD) and Otto Grotewohl (SPD) shaking hands at the Unification Party Congress on 22 April 1946 at the Admiralspalast in Berlin. Gelatin silver print. 1960s. Dimensions approx. 54 x 40.5 cm. The photograph of the handshake, which sealed the merger of the two workers’ parties – orchestrated in part by the Soviet occupying power – to form the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), became a central propaganda symbol and emblem in the GDR. - On the reverse: the photographer’s estate and address stamps. - Slightly creased, edges with minor scuffs and partly slightly unevenly trimmed, one backed tear; otherwise generally well preserved.
