Russia Bianchi, Ivan Babigon (Church of Saint Alexandra, the Martyr Queen, on the Babigonsky Hills). 1854. Vintage, salt-paper print. 22.2 cm x 17.4 cm. Mounted on stiff cardboard. The title, date and photographer’s name are inscribed in the lower margin of the image. The photographer Ivan Bianchi (1811–1893), originally from Ticino, attended an art school in Moscow and subsequently travelled to Russia on numerous occasions, particularly to St Petersburg, to take photographs. His photographs of St Petersburg are regarded not only as the earliest photographs of Russia, but as the earliest city views in existence. – Print slightly yellowed, faded and soiled, otherwise in good condition. – An extremely rare historical document.
