Spain – Canary Islands A collection of 89 expedition photographs taken by the German botanist Erwin Baur in the Canary Islands. Berlin, c. 1905. Gelatin silver prints, including 7 x 10.5 to 16 x 11.5 cm (26 x 20.5 cm). Mounted on 69 cardboard panels, loose in half-leather envelopes with mounted labels. Erwin Baur, the German botanist and geneticist, documented the native plants as well as the landscape and people during an expedition to the Canary Islands. Baur is regarded as a leading figure in neo-Darwinism and experimental population genetics, and received numerous honours in recognition of his achievements. His role in the German eugenics movement is controversial. – Some prints are heavily silvered. Overall, a very well-preserved collection featuring numerous botanical photographs, amongst others.
