Description
USA Hoover Dam, Nevada and Arizona. Album containing 93 original silver gelatine prints, each numbered, dated and occasionally labelled in pencil on the reverse. No place, 1935. Approx. 23.5 x 18 cm (slide case) x 16.6 x 21.5 cm (photographs). Loose in a cardboard box for Kodak AZO photographic paper, printed with the title and bearing two mounted printed label stickers (box shows signs of wear; photographs have slight curling at the top and bottom edges). Unique photographic documentation of the monumental engineering feat that was the construction of the Hoover Dam. – The 93 photographs cover the period from August to December 1932. Before the dam could be built, the Colorado River had to be diverted. To this end, four diversion tunnels were driven through the canyon walls, two on the Nevada side and two on the Arizona side. These tunnels had a diameter of 17 m and a total length of almost 5 km. On 13 November 1932, the river was diverted through two of the tunnels. The photographs depict various machines and work processes, including a temporary suspension bridge over the Colorado River, dams, shots of the massive blasting operations, landscape views and group portraits of the workers. - Some of the prints are slightly browned or tinted; overall, a well-preserved, unique set of photographs.
