Arnaldus of Villa Nova (1235–1311) was one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of medieval medicine, personal physician to kings and popes. He introduced ethyl alcohol (which he called ‘Aqua Vini’ and ‘Aqua Vitae’), produced by the distillation of wine, into Western medicine. He also used it to produce alcoholic extracts from medicinal herbs for medical purposes, such as liniments. The successful technique of extracting active ingredients from plants, known as maceration, is still used for medical purposes today. Many alchemical texts were falsely attributed to him after his death in order to lend greater authority to the works. - With numerous underlinings in red, further marginal notes and 7 bound-in leaves, both sides bearing notes in an old hand.
