Alchemy – Witchcraft Wecker, Johannes Jacob De Secretis. Libri XVII. With some 70 illustrations in the text. Basel, Ex Officina Pernea (Konrad von Waldkirch), 1592. 4 leaves, 902 pp., 16 leaves. Small 8°. Contemporary paper binding with Spanish edges, fillets and handwritten title page (fastenings missing, heavily stained, rubbed and bumped, paper binding partly brittle). VD16 W 1376 – With several handwritten ownership notes on the title page and the half-title page, including one by Johannes Henricus Patrick dated 1627. – With the stamp of the Progymnase R.G.D. Echternach. - The first edition of *The Book of Secrets* by the Swiss physician and philosopher Johannes Jacob Wecker was published in 1582. It deals with alchemy, astrology, demons, angels and magic. Wecker was married to the poet and cookbook author Anna Wecker. - The book was printed by Konrad von Waldkirch, the son-in-law of the Italian printer Pietro Perna. - Water-stained, more severely so at the lower edge. Spotted and edges browned. Some handwritten notes. Overall in good condition; text legible throughout. Alchemy. – Witchcraft. – With approximately 70 illustrations in the text.
