(Spine professionally restored and partially scraped, resulting in some loss of binding material). David Rumsey Map Center, 15436.000. – Houzeau & Lancaster 8172 (text volume only). – A magnificent and rare atlas volume, including the text volume, which is usually missing. - The seven impressive and beautiful double-page colour plates, engraved by A. Gianni based on drawings by Sigismond Visconti for the first five, revised by Auguste-Henri Dufour from Visconti’s drawings for the sixth, and by Dufour for the final page, depict the solar system, the orbit of the Earth’s annual revolution round the Sun with an indication of the seasons, the phases of the Moon, and the solar and lunar eclipses during their progression and regression. A cross-section of the Earth, taken at the equator and viewed from the Arctic Pole, as well as the planisphere. Some slight staining, particularly at the margins; a few crease marks and old, restored marginal tears. The endpaper is slightly water-stained in places. Overall, a decent copy with vivid colour plates from this rare astronomical atlas. A cross-section of the Earth taken at the equator and viewed from the Arctic Pole. – and the planisphere. “The work was favourably reviewed in a number of contemporary sources, which praised Visconti for presenting the complex theories of such luminaries as Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton regarding the workings of the solar system and its principal phenomena in such an easy-to-understand and highly visual manner” (See Stanford University Libraries). Somewhat stained, particularly along the edges; a few creases and old, repaired tears along the edges. The endpapers are somewhat water-stained in places. Overall, a decent copy with vivid, colourful prints of this rare astronomical atlas. This lot is subject to standard tax.
