Description
Botany Seaweeds, Jersey. c. 1860. Souvenir leporello containing 20 pressed seaweeds. Specimens mounted on vellum, each secured by corner slits to green vellum. 54 x 75 cm. Each labelled in ink using Latin nomenclature. Title label printed on the outer side featuring a wreath of seaweed, as well as a printed verse label, signed ‘Curtis’. Mounted fully unfolded on a backing and framed under glass (unopened). Seaweed collecting was one of the great passions of the Victorian era and made the coasts of southern England and the Channel Islands destinations for travellers with an interest in natural history. The names follow the taxonomy of William Henry Harvey, whose *Phycologia Britannica* (1846–51) popularised the preparation of marine algae. The selection combines red, brown and green algae, ranging from the finely branched fans of *Plocamium coccineum* and *Bonnemaisonia asparagoides* to the concentrically banded discs of *Padina pavonia*, which is found in the warm waters around Jersey. - Species included, amongst others: Polysiphonia nigrescens, Plocamium coccineum, Laminaria phyllitis, Bonnemaisonia asparagoides, Nitophyllum, Griffithsia setacea, Padina pavonia, Delesseria sanguinea, Desmarestia aculeata, Halymenia ligulata, Punctaria latifolia, Dumontia filiformis, Cladophora, Rhodymenia laciniata, Ectocarpus littoralis, Dasya coccinea and four others. - Edges partly slightly irregular and with isolated, very short tears; partially with faint water stains and isolated mould stains; fold lines partly slightly rubbed and with light discolouration at the edges; mounting slightly wavy; specimens slightly faded due to age. Overall, very good. Delicate, fascinatingly detailed views of the marine plants in their natural colours. Botany. – Souvenir leporello with 20 pressed seaweed specimens.
