Description
Botany – Botanica Specifica German, 19th century Album Amicorum. 1841. Pencil on vellum. 9 x 16.5 cm (10.5 x 18 cm). Framed with a passe-partout and behind glass. Inscribed ‘At Königsbach, 30 August 1841.’ – The Album Amicorum, also known as a ‘Stammbuch’, was a friendship or memento book that was particularly popular amongst scholars, students and members of the nobility from the 16th to the 18th century. It originated in humanist circles and served to collect entries from friends, professors or well-known figures. The sheet before us features a delicate floral drawing, created in the context of an Album Amicorum. - The sheet is browned due to age and has some slight brown spots on the edges. Traces of previous mounting remain on the reverse. Overall in very good condition with a fine, nuanced drawing. Pencil on wove paper. Framed under a passe-partout and behind glass. - The Album Amicorum, also known as the Stammbuch, was a book of friendship or memories that was particularly popular amongst scholars, students and aristocrats in the 16th to 18th centuries.
