Description
Botany – Botanica Specifica Magnolia and Veronica spicata. 2 original drawings. Watercolour, partly with opaque colours, over a fine pencil sketch, on paper. Each approx. 35 × 25 cm (sheet size). The colours are fresh. The paper has a slight age-related discolouration and a few faint stains (on the second sheet, top left and in the centre). The second drawing is inscribed and dated in ink in the bottom right-hand corner: ‘Schloßberg near Teplitz. 10 July 1862.’ (The Schloßberg near Teplitz (Czech: Doubravská hora or Doubravka for short; historically also known as Daubersberg) is a striking hill, 382 metres high, on the eastern edge of the North Bohemian spa town of Teplice (Teplitz) in the Czech Republic) The following are depicted: magnolia. A flowering branch is shown, featuring a fully open flower and a larger one that is still half-closed. There are also two buds, one of which has the typical fuzzy brown bud casing. The petals transition from a deep purple-carmine at the base to a delicate white-pink at the tips. This colour gradient is rendered very realistically using fine glazes and a dabbing technique. The gnarled branch, with leaf scars and bud bases, is modelled in rich detail using shades of brown and grey. The species corresponds to the appearance of the tulip magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana). Spiked speedwell (Veronica spicata). The entire plant is depicted, from the root system to the flower spike. The inflorescences are shown at various stages of development: the upper spike has blossomed in a rich violet-blue, whilst the lateral spikes are still in bud and silvery-grey. The narrow, grey-green leaves are delicately rendered using a glazing technique. The plant is composed diagonally across the page, as is typical of scientific botanical studies. In the bottom right-hand corner is a handwritten label in ink, stating the location and date. Botany. – Botanica Specifica – Magnolia and a Veronica spicata. 2 original drawings.
