Geology
Bauerman, Hilary
A descriptive catalogue of the geological, mining, and metallurgical models in the Museum of Practical Geology. London, Eyre and Spottiswoode 1865. VIII, 199 (1) 8° format. Original binding with title label on cover (spine with missing sections, pages occasionally slightly stained, dusty).
First edition of the first descriptive catalogue of the London Museum of Practical Geology. – BMC I, 112. - Not listed in D. Murray, Museums: Their History and Their Use, 1904. - Extremely rare; we have found no other copy at auction. - Contains, amongst other things, detailed information on geological, mining and metallurgical models, machines and instruments, including those used to illustrate geological phenomena, as well as mining tools, drilling machines, surveying instruments, drawing machines, numerous models demonstrating the workings of coal and salt mines, pumps, ventilation systems, punching, screening, crushing and separating machines, as well as metallurgical models. An index provides a detailed overview of this informative guide. The back cover features a list of publications in the museum’s series (“Memoirs…”). - The guide was compiled by the geologist and mineralogist Hilary Bauerman (1833–1909), who, amongst other things, served as head of the North American Boundary Commission in Canada in 1858 and was also a member of the Geological Society of London (cited from Schuh’s Annotated Bio-Bibliography, online). The collections of the museum, founded in the 1830s and one of the very first scientifically run institutions of its kind, are now housed in the Natural History Museum. - Edges somewhat stained, slightly browned, otherwise a clean copy of this rare item.
