He joined at a time of extraordinary scientific activity and conducted research in the fields of chemistry, geology and mineralogy. However, his most significant contributions were in the field of geology. He emphasised the importance of the various strata in determining the Earth’s history, which means he can be regarded as one of the founders of stratigraphy. - Edges browned. Slightly foxed.
