Description
Geology Wangenheim von Qualen, Friedrich An overview of the stratigraphic relationships of the rock formations in the western part of the Orenburg Governorate. (and) Fragmentary additions to the depositional conditions of the formations in the western part of the Orenburg Governorate. 2 parts in 1 volume. With 2 folded lithographic plates. St Petersburg, Krax, 1843. 58, 24 pp. Hardback with mounted title label (slightly stained and scuffed, lower headband with a small loss). Offprints from the ‘Proceedings of the Imperial Mineral Society of St Petersburg’ 1843 and 1844. – Very rare first edition. - A significant pioneering geological work by the German-Baltic naturalist Friedrich Wangenheim von Qualen. With this work, he provided one of the first detailed geological descriptions and stratigraphic overviews of the Orenburg region on the edge of the Ural Mountains. At that time, the region was the focus of international geological attention, as Roderick Murchison had shortly before (in 1841) defined the Permian System there as a distinct geological formation. The work was an important regional contribution to the verification and refinement of the new Permian System in Russia. It helped Western European geologists to better understand the complex stratigraphic conditions and the distribution of mineral resources in the Orenburg Governorate. – Slightly browned and slightly stained, stamp on title page, 1 map with a tear, inside cover repaired with adhesive.
