Geology – Metallurgy
by Löhneysen, Georg Engelhard
A Thorough and Detailed Report on Mines / How to Construct Them Usefully and Productively, Bring Them into Successful Operation, and Maintain Them in a State of Prosperity. Stockholm and Hamburg (Leipzig), published by Gottfried Liebezeits, 1690. With an engraved title page and 16 folded copperplate plates. (2) 343 pp. Contemporary parchment binding. (Binding slightly stained; spine renewed and the old spine expertly laminated)
Darmstadt Mining Booklets, No. 99. – Hoover Collection, No. 544. – Prandtl, ‘Löhneyss’, in: Zeitschrift für Bücherfreunde, 39 (1935), pp. 15–22. - Third edition of the significant early modern compendium on mining and metallurgy by Georg Engelhard von Löhneyß (1552–c. 1625), the Brunswick Privy Mining Councillor and Chief Mining Officer. The first edition was published in Zellerfeld in 1617; this 1690 edition, published by Gottfried Liebezeit, follows the revised version published around 1660 and replaces the woodcuts of the first edition with copperplate engravings. Löhneyß approaches mining not merely from a technical perspective, but as a comprehensive economic and administrative undertaking. It discusses the establishment, expansion and operation of mines; the processing and smelting of ores – particularly gold and silver; machinery and furnace technology; the production or extraction of sulphur, vitriol, alum, saltpetre and salt; as well as issues relating to bookkeeping, wage accounting and operational organisation. A key component is also the mining code, containing provisions on the duties, rights and freedoms of miners. This richly illustrated work is one of the key German-language sources for understanding 17th-century Central European mining and metallurgy. Its particular appeal lies in the combination of practical mining knowledge with material on administrative, legal and economic history. The 1690 edition is rare on the market; complete copies featuring the engraved title page and all 16 folded plates are particularly sought after. Partial water-stain margins on the first 10 or so leaves, then diminishing; pages partly browned or with some brown spots; copperplate plates slightly brown-spotted and with 2 small, continuous wormholes. Rare.

Its particular significance lies in the combination of practical mining technology with material relating to administration, law and economic history. The 1690 edition is rare on the market; complete copies retaining the engraved title page and all 16 folding plates are particularly sought after. A marginal water stain on the first 10 or so leaves, which diminishes thereafter; pages are partly browned and occasionally have some brown spots. The engraved plates have light brown spots and two small wormholes running through them. Rare.
