Description
Geology – Mineralogy Scrope, B. Poulett The geology and extinct volcanoes of central France. With 17 plates and two coloured geological maps. John Murray, Albemarle Street, London, 1858. XVIII., 258 pp. Contemporary green smoothed goatskin binding with gold-embossed spine and leather corners. (Slightly rubbed). Roller-G. II, 421 – DSB XII, 261 ff - Poggendorff II, 882 ff - Second, substantially expanded edition of ‘Memoir on the Geology of Central France’ (1826), one of Scrope’s most influential major geological works. A comprehensive work on the geology of the French Massif Central and the extinct volcanoes of Auvergne, Velay and Vivarais. The book describes the sequence of volcanic rocks and sediments, the forms of cinder cones, lava flows and maars, as well as the deeply incised valleys where the stratigraphic sequences are particularly well exposed, and serves, in a sense, as a geological guidebook leading the reader through the landscape. A distinctive feature is the numerous maps, panoramas and cross-sections in which Scrope depicts basalt columnar complexes, valleys and stratigraphy in great detail to support his interpretation of the volcanic history of the Massif Central. The work forms part of his efforts to promote a plutonic-volcanic perspective on the Earth’s history as opposed to Neptunist theories, and became a fundamental reference text for early volcanology and stratigraphy in Europe. – A good copy.
