Paris, Michel de Vascosan, 1555. 3 blank leaves, 4 leaves (title page, preface, index), 72 numbered leaves, 3 leaves. 2nd 4°. 18th-century half-leather binding with gold-stamped floral decoration. Title page; covers bound in combed marble-patterned paper with red edging on the reverse (front joint partially torn; leather discoloured in the upper section, slightly rubbed and stained). Fourth edition of Finé’s arithmetic. - Smith, *Rara Arithmetica*, p. 163. - Posthumous edition published by Oronce Finés’s (1494–1555) son Jean; Oronce was a renowned mathematician and professor at the Collège Royal. The work is divided into four chapters, covering integrals, common fractions, sexagesimal fractions and proportions. - Provenance: ‘South Library’ of the Earls of Macclesfield at Shirburn Castle, bearing the lithographed ex libris featuring the family coat of arms, as well as owner’s inscriptions on and around it. - The book block is more heavily water-stained in the upper third; the endpapers and flyleaves show glue stains in the corners; the first front flyleaf is loose; otherwise a sound copy of an early and important mathematical treatise.
