Guldin, Paul
(Centrobaryca). On the Centre of Gravity of the Three Species of Continuous Quantity. Book One (...) Appendices / In addition, tables of numbers, squares and cubes. (...) With an engraved title vignette, 1 folded copperplate, additionally etched, 1 woodcut plate, numerous, often large-format and occasionally full-page geometric woodcut illustrations and tables, several florally ornamented, often large vignettes, as well as numerous initials, all in woodcut. Vienna, Gelbhaar, 1635. (12, frontispiece, title page, dedication, preface, table of contents) folios (marked )(1–6 and §1–6), 227 (1) pp., 99 (tables) and (5, index) Large 4° format. Contemporary paper binding, the covers featuring blind-embossed fillets and remnants of two removed fabric fastening straps, as well as a owner’s label on the front cover (slightly warped, somewhat stained and rubbed).
First edition of the first of four parts of Guldin’s magnum opus. – DSB V, 588ff. – Poggendorff I, 978ff. – De Backer-Sommervogel III, col. 1946ff., No. 6. – The most significant work by the mathematician Paul Guldin (born Habakuk, 1577–1643). The work, also titled ‘Centrobaryea’, was published between 1635 or 1640 and 1641 (parts 2–4) in Vienna by Gelbhaar and Cosmerovius respectively, and contains the ‘Guldin’s rule’—named after the author and of great significance in the history of science—which, according to Poggendorf, was already mentioned in a similar form by Pappus around 300 BC. - “In the first volume, Guldin determined the centres of gravity of plane rectilinear and curvilinear figures and of solids in the Archimedean manner. In response to Nicolo Cabeo’s attacks in *Philosophia magnetica* (1629) directed against his theory concerning the motion of the Earth, Guldin reproduced in Volume I his dissertation of 1622 and a note in which he discussed Cabeo’s arguments” (DSB). - Title page, endpapers, margins and edges show some minor foxing in places; leaves R2 and R3 have a few small ink stains; leaves S3 and S4 show traces of glue along the fold of the pasted-in plate. Endpapers with owner’s notes in ink and pencil. Pagination error: 16 and 21 instead of 216 and 217. – Overall, a well-preserved, wide-margined copy with a bold print.
