Description
Mathematics Leslie, John An experimental inquiry into the nature and propagation of heat. With 9 (5 folded) copper plates. London, Mawman, 1804. XV, 562 pp. Contemporary half-leather binding with red endpapers (scraped, joints torn, headbands with missing sections). First edition. – DSB VIII, 261–262 – Leslie’s magnum opus established several fundamental laws of thermal radiation: that the emissivity and absorptivity of any surface are equal; that the emissivity of a surface increases with increasing reflectivity; and that the intensity of heat radiated from a surface is proportional to the sine of the angle of the rays to the surface. The book also played an important role in the early 19th-century debate over whether heat was a form of matter or a mode of motion. Leslie’s experiments showed that, unlike light, heat was not transmitted directly through transparent solids. In Chapter 19, Leslie describes some of the apparatus, in particular a photometer, which he used in his experiments. – Somewhat brown-stained or with water-stains in places.
