Description
Medicine Bruns, Victor Surgical Diseases and Injuries of the Brain and its Membranes (= Handbook of Practical Surgery for Physicians and Surgeons. Part One: The Brain and its Membranes). Tübingen, Laupp, 1854. XIV, 1096 pp. Large 8vo. Contemporary paper binding with gold-stamped spine label and library label (worn, bumped, edges scuffed). Victor von Bruns (1812–1883) gained renown in particular for his pioneering work in the field of laryngological surgery (Hirsch/Hübotter I, 740). At the same time, he is regarded as one of the early pioneers of neurosurgery in Germany. However, his ‘Handbook of Practical Surgery’, originally conceived as an eight-volume work, was never completed. Von Bruns published only two volumes on head and facial surgery. The accompanying atlas, too, appeared in only two volumes, dealing with the ‘brain and its coverings’ and the ‘organs of mastication and taste’. The two text volumes, the first of which is presented here, are now very rarely found. - Ownership note, library stamp of the University Surgical Clinic of Tübingen; front flyleaf has fingerprints; slightly yellowed due to the paper; generally well preserved.
