Description
Medicine – Neurology Gutnikov, Sinoviy Vasilievich Materialy k utcheniyu o khimicheskom sostoyenii mosga cheloveka. (Materials for a theory of the chemical composition of the human brain.) Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Kharkiv, University Press, 1893. IX (1), 412 pp. Large 8°. Modern half-leather binding (some finger marks and soiling). A significant contribution to early brain research, with an original dedication by the author. - Thesis by Sinovy Vasilyevich Gutnikov (1857–1920), a Russian neurologist who served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Warsaw from 1899. From 1917 to 1920, he headed the Department of Medical Diagnostics at the University of Warsaw during its evacuation to Rostov-on-Don. At the same time, he served as senior physician at the headquarters of the Commander of the Don Flotilla. He was awarded the Order of St Anne, 2nd Class, and the Order of St Stanislaus, 2nd Class. In July 1920, following the Bolsheviks’ seizure of power, Gutnikov was executed for ‘counter-revolutionary’ activities. (See Krylov-Tolstikovich, Russian Doctors, new edition, 2017). - Gutnikov’s study presented here was written at a time of intensive research into the biochemistry of the nervous system, which aimed to gain a better understanding of the chemical composition of the brain and, consequently, the pathology of neurological diseases. With his doctoral thesis, Gutnikov made a significant contribution to the systematisation of knowledge regarding the chemical constituents of brain tissue (proteins, lipids, minerals), and his findings – that the human brain consists of water (approx. 75–80 per cent), lipids (roughly half of the dry weight), proteins, carbohydrates and salts, have been confirmed by modern research. - Provenance: Koloman (Kalman) Pándy (1868–1945), Hungarian neurologist and psychiatrist; bearing his stamp and the author’s original dedication to him in German on the title page: “To my colleague Dr Koloman Pándy, as a kind memento of the author. Warsaw, 24 October 1896.” – Title page and last three leaves slightly foxed; otherwise a very clean, uncut copy with full outer margins. Medicine – Neurology. - A significant contribution to early brain research, with the author’s original inscription. Bound in modern cardboard. - Dissertation by Sinovy Vasilyevich Gutnikov (1857–1920), a Russian neurologist who served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Warsaw from 1899.
