Description
Medicine – Urology
Becquerel, Alfred
A comprehensive treatise on the characteristics of urine in the healthy, but particularly in the diseased state, together with a detailed discussion of Bright’s disease at various stages of life. German edition edited by Siegmund Frankenberg and S. Landmann. With a preface by Franz Rinecker. Leipzig, Kollmann, 1843. VI, 529 pp. Contemporary paperback with spine label and gilt lettering (slightly scuffed).
Second German adaptation of Becquerel’s *Séméiotique des urines*. - Page 117 - This work plays a key role in the history of nephrology and urology, as it is one of the first works to combine a comprehensive, scientific clinical analysis of urine with research into specific kidney diseases. This translation is of particular significance, as, according to Voswinckel, it was produced in Würzburg, one of the centres of scientific medicine. “Virchow and Kölliker established cellular pathology here; Rinecker initiated the German translation here of the groundbreaking ‘Comprehensive Treatise on Urine Symptoms’ by the Frenchman Alfred Becquerel” (Voswinckel, *Der schwarze Urin*, p. 113). Voswinckel continues in footnote 281: In the chapter ‘Urine Colour’, he gave the following programmatic instruction: ‘The colour alone is not sufficient to conclude that blood is present; one must first apply reagents, namely nitric acid and heat, to detect the protein and, with the aid of a microscope, distinguish the blood cells’. Here, too, is the first reference to black urine: ‘The haemoglobin changes very rapidly in the urine and turns dark or almost black. ‘We have often had the opportunity to observe such urine, and are convinced that the black urine known to the ancients was, for the most part, nothing other than this’ (p. 113). – Slightly browned, bookplate on inside cover.
