Medicine – Urology Duvernoy, Gustav Chemical and Medical Investigations into Human Urine. Stuttgart, Brodhag, 1835. 4 leaves, 59 pp. Contemporary paperback (including original cover). First edition. – Along with other contemporary researchers, Duvernoy was among the first to replace uroscopy (the mere visual examination of urine) with systematic chemical analyses. Duvernoy no longer examined human urine merely qualitatively, but sought to isolate and determine the exact chemical constituents of urine in both healthy and diseased states. The book helped to establish the understanding of urine as a ‘reflection of the body’s metabolism’. - Inside back cover bearing a handwritten ownership note by Dr Karl Schaeffer (1808–1888), who also practised in Stuttgart until 1838 before becoming medical director of the Royal (Mental) Hospital in Zwiefalten (until 1874). - A fine copy.
