Description
Medicine – Urology Haken, August Urethral dilator for urethroscopy. With 2 woodcuts. pp. (177–)179, in: Wiener medizinische Wochenschrift, Vol. 12, No. 12. Folio. Folded, uncut sheet. Vienna, (Pichler’s Widow for Seidel & Son), 1862. First edition of this significant publication on urethral endoscopy. - “August Haken (1833–1888), zoologist and physician, born in Riga, studied zoology in Yuryev (Dorpat, Tartu) and subsequently medicine, with studies in Berlin, Prague and Vienna. Haken made endoscopy of the urethra practicable with his simplified, three-bladed ‘dilatatorium urethrae’ and is thus the predecessor of Grünfeld. His dilation speculum has never been replicated. The three arms of the endoscope are each 1.75 mm thick; when closed, they touch one another. He proposed directing the light from the side-mounted lamp, via a concave reflector kept clear, through a funnel and into the urethra using the speculum manufactured by Josef Leiter of Vienna; the patient sits on a table, whilst the doctor sits and kneels between the patient’s thighs. He divides the endoscope into three parts (as with the laryngoscope) and is thus the first to depart from the ‘Bozzini principle’ (‘unified endoscope’) (Reuter, History of Endoscopy, p. 48, Fig. 26). - With original sales stamp; slight creases.
