Harley, George
On intermittent haematuria, with remarks upon its pathology and treatment. pp. 161–184, in: Medico-Chirurgical Transactions. Published by the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. Vol. 48. With numerous illustrations. London, Longmans, Green and Co., 1865. LIV, 340 pp. Green half-leather binding with gold and blind-stamped decoration, with gilt head edging.
First edition of the classic description of ‘Harley’s disease’, ‘Harley’s classic description of paroxysmal haemoglobinuria’ (Garrison/Morton 4171). – ‘It cannot be emphasised often enough that the sensory perception of dark urine marked the beginning of this field of knowledge. Dacie rightly highlights in his introduction the curious fact that it was the – from today’s perspective – extremely rare cases of cold haemoglobinuria and PNH that opened up our understanding of haemolysis. One can scarcely shake off the impression that a dam had burst amongst practitioners after Georges Harley presented his case to the Royal Society in London on 9 May 1865” (Voswinckel, *Der schwarze Urin*, p. 111 ff.). - Anton Dressler and George Harley, the two physicians who first described the condition and after whom it was later named, were both based in Würzburg, then the centre of scientific medicine; both were members of the Würzburg Society for Physical and Medical Sciences. - Complete volume containing numerous original treatises, with numerous illustrations. - A good copy.
